Good to know about the healthcare in Hungary!

Before you travel to Hungary, read carefully our healthcare section. We’ve collected the most important info to stay healthy and safe in Hungary.


  1. If you are EEA citizen you have to apply for a European Health Insurance Card in your home country.
  2. If you are a non-EEA citizen, you have to arrange the health insurance in your country or if it is included in your tuition fee, ask the university to inform you about it.
  3. If you are in Hungary with a scholarship you are eligible to use the Hungarian health care system. But in order to use the free services you have to apply for TAJ (health insurance) number.
  4. If you take any medication on a regular basis, secure yourself with the right amount of medicine (you can bring with you a maximum of 1 or 3 monthly dose depending on validity of your passport/ID,visa)
  5. Be aware that the prescription, the description of the medications and all the documents provided by the state health institutions in Hungary are written only in Hungarian. If you need an unofficial, fast translation, don't hezitate to contact us for our services.
  6. Be aware of the emergency numbers in Hungary, save them into your phone.
  7. If you've purchased a health insurance (in your home country or in Hungary), read the contract to be aware which services are you eligible for, and what is the process if you need to use your insurance: What is the number of your insurance contract? What number do you have to call, if you have any health issue? You have to pay on the spot and you have to send the invoices to your insurance company, or you don't have to pay on the spot? What is the amount of the insurance limit? Exactly what can be covered with your insurance? Which documents do you need in order to be able to ask for a refund of the health service you paid for?
  8. In all the situations when you visit a health service provider, you need to show your ID, passport, residence permit or registration card and your insurance number.
  9. If you are on a special diet (lactose, gluten, etc.) products meeting your needs are available also in Hungary.
  10. Be aware of your blood type and your allergies.
