Good to know about studying in Hungary!

The Hungarian higher education has several peculiarities like the universities’ codes, the Hungarian digital education system, the grading system etc.


  1. Hungary has several higher education programs in English. Field of  studies: agriculture science (for example Gödöllő University), arts, business studies (for example Corvinus University, IBS), computer science and IT, economic science, engineering science, legal science (for example Budapest  University Of Technology and Economics), medical and health science (for example Semmelweis University), music academy (for example (Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music), natural science, social science (for example Eötvös Loránd University), sport science, teacher training, tourism (for example Budapest Business School)
  2. Each university has a short code, it contains the initials of the university name in Hungarian. You can check these codes here.
  3. Programs of higher education are offered on 3 levels: BA/BSc (3–4 years), MA/MSc (1-2 years) PhD/DLA (2+2 years)
  4. Hungary has also preparatory programs for the university entrance exams.
  5. Check the universities' admission requirements. If you can't choose, or you need help to apply for the university, contact us, or check our online services to find an online consultation day.
  6. The academic year is divided into 2 semesters: 1st or fall semester starts in the beginning of September to mid December (exam period: mid December – end of January); 2nd semester starts in the beginning of February to mid May (exam period: mid May – end of June)
  7. Grading system in Hungary is different from ECTS grading:  1(FX, F): fail          2(=E): pass                3(=D): satisfactory              4(=C): good                5(=A,B): excellent
  8. Sometimes it might happen to you not to pass all the exams, and if the subject(s) in question is (are) a prerequisite of another subject from the following semester, it might happen to you to be passive the following semester. Always check, which are these subjects, and focus more on these.
  9. Neptun System is a unified educational system in Hungary. All the universities are using this system: it contains all the information about the student's studies (courses, descriptions, timetables, grades etc.). Download the Neptun app on your phone.
  10. Check our study help applications list and download them.
  11. Ask for and read carefully the regulation of the university (the prerequisites of the exams, how many creditpoints you need to collect in order to continue your studies, how many times you can repeat the exam, dean's chance).
  12. Always consult upper year students, exchange your experiences.
  13. If you are one year before your graduation, we recommend you to start to read about the accreditation of your degree.
